Happy Birthday Piper Cub!
2012 marks the 75th anniversary of Piper Aircraft’s iconic Piper Cub light aircraft and the company is celebrating! And as part of the celebration, all Piper Cub owners far and wide are invited to fly in to participate in a mass gathering at this year’s EAA AirVenture, taking place July 23-29 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
A "Field of Yellow"...
Hundreds of Piper cubs are expected to take part in the celebration, turning the EAA AirVenture flightline into a “field of yellow”. Those who wish to participate can get all the details, including registration information on the official Cubs to Oshkosh interactive community website.
“When talking about iconic aircraft that pioneered the GA [General Aviation] movement, you need to look no further than the distinctive Piper Cub,” said Rod Hightower, EAA President/CEO. “Like many other aircraft types, Cub owners are a community-oriented group that is synonymous with EAA; s culture. If you own or fly a Piper Cub, you need to be at EAA AirVenture and be a key part in honoring 75 years all week long.”
Among the related activities are gathering points throughout North America where Cub owners can gather en route. Gathering points and Cub owners already signed up to participate can be viewed here.
A Week-Long Celebration
Special displays and programs throughout the week will celebrate the legacy of the aircraft, including two air shows - one featuring Greg Koontze and the Alabama boys, a comedy routine with highlights that include a Piper J-3 Cub landing on top of a truck; and another featuring Kyle Franklin, returning this year to perform his popular PA-18 Super Cub comedy routine.
Win a Piper J-3 Cub!
In addition to the ongoing anniversary related activities and events, this year’s EAA Sweepstakes will award one lucky winner with a Piper J-3 Cub in honor of the celebration! The EAA Sweepstakes is one of the longest running airplane giveaways in the world, supporting the future of aviation through EAA’s aviation education programs.
