May greetings from Shoreline Aviation!

Sales and Acquisitions associate Erin Mulcahy and Operations and Charter Sales associate Peter Bukuras talk all things Shoreline at Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce

It’s a beautiful, sometimes sneezy time of year. We hope you’re enjoying all the blooming trees and flowers!

And it’s been a busy month here at Shoreline – here’s a taste!

Marshfield firefighters carry out annual airport training

A different, yet familiar sight filled the tarmac at KGHG in May. Marshfield Fire Department held its annual training at the 75-year-old Marshfield Municipal Airport.

Shoreline Aviation President Keith Douglass welcomed the airport’s guests – most of whom had made multiple visits over the years. They repeat the exercise annually to ensure that the department knows all the ins and outs should emergency services ever be necessary.

Shoreline Aviation (www.shorelineaviation.net) operates the airport for the town, and has for 42 years. The town has owned it since 1967. The history of the airport can be found here: www.shorelineaviation.net/fbo/marshfield-airport-kghg-2.

A tour of the property was conducted by Airport Manager Jason Tibbetts and Assistant Manager Ben Garman.

The visits establish familiarity with the physical layout of the airport as well as how the airport operates, Garman said. MFD has access to the several primary and emergency gates surrounding the fenced-in airport.

Tibbetts and Garman explained the differences between the two basic types of aircraft they generally see – piston powered aircraft running on aviation gasoline and jet powered aircraft running on jet fuel.

The managers took their guests to the fuel farm – which went into service in 2019 and features the latest safety technology – where they explained how Shoreline’s fuel trucks are filled and show them where all the emergency shutoffs are for the fuel tanks. They also demonstrate how the fuel trucks are filled and how their emergency shutoffs operate.

South Shore Flying Club

One of the South Shore’s best-kept secrets, the South Shore Flying Club has been flying high for 57 years. The club owns two single-prop planes – a 1999 Piper Archer III low wing and a 1976 Cessna 172 Skyhawk, a high-wing plane. The planes live in hangars at Marshfield Municipal Airport (KGHG). Shoreline performs all their maintenance.

“The intended membership is about 24; that’s 12 fliers per plane,” Board of Directors member Karl Swenson said in a recent conversation. Currently, the club has 23 members. The club will accept standby, or social, members, who can become regular members when an opening crops up.

“Some members would love to buy a plane, but expenses like raising a family and putting kids through college put it lower on the priority list,” Karl said. “Being a member of a flying club provides greater flexibility and lower costs than plane rental or purchase.”

The initial membership buy-in costs $2,000. Monthly dues are $150. Flight time cost fluctuates, depending on fuel prices, and currently is $130 per hour. That includes gas, oil and variable costs. The planes burn about 10 gallons of fuel an hour; at current fuel prices, that’s a bit over half of the hourly cost. Often, members will fly together and share the cost, cutting that expense in half.

We share a feature story about SSFC on Shoreline’s website at www.shorelineaviation.net/news-article/south-shore-flying-club-a-great-freedom, including insights from club Treasurer/Director Steve Rusconi and a link to Karl’s YouTube video page, which has several videos from local and destination flights.

Show and tell

The past month saw members of the Shoreline team at publicity events, talking it up with prospective clients and peers in the aviation industry. First up, the Plymouth (MA) Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Business Expo featured Shoreline Aviation’s Aircraft Management, Sales and Acquisitions associate Erin Mulcahy and Operations and Charter Sales associate Peter Bukuras chatting amiably with many of the couple thousand or so attendees.

This was a first-time appearance at the regional chamber’s hugely popular event, with many business cards collected and names put in the hat for a drawing of fun gift basket of Shoreline swag.

Then in May, Mulcahy and Bukuras, along with Charter Operations Manager Patrick Olson, Flight Logistics associate Logan Timpany, and Shoreline Aviation President Keith Douglass schmoozed attendees of the Massachusetts Business Aviation Association’s annual Aviation Day, held at the Jet Aviation hangar at Bedford-Hanscom Field.

In addition to talking aviation with industry peers and curious want-to-knows, the team took the opportunity to visit up close several beautiful business aviation aircraft. Among the jets presented, fans swarmed through a magnificent Gulfstream G600, a beautiful Falcon 2000XLS, a striking Citation XLS GEN2, and a rugged Pilatus PC-24. Teammates were especially interested in the latter three, as Shoreline offers a beautiful Falcon 2000 XL EASy, a striking Citation Excel 560XL, and a rugged Pilatus PC-12 in its fleet lineup.

Amid the oohs and ahs came the satisfaction of knowing their fleet’s aircraft stand right up with others at the top of the business aviation list.

This month we feature aviator and civil rights activist Willa Brown.

  • American aviator and civil rights leader Willa Brown was the first African American female to obtain her pilot’s and commercial pilot’s licenses in the late 1930s.
  • She attended the Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical University in Chicago to obtain an aviation maintenance license. One of the first women to do so in the 1930s.
  • She began a brief political career before the Second World War, lobbying the American government for desegregated armed forces, particularly the then Army Air Corps.
  • Brown notoriously stormed into the office of the Chicago Tribune and pitched for the advertising of an all-African American airshow at Chicago’s Harlem Field. The event was a success and showcased the talents of many Chicago African American aviators.
  • She became an active trainer for the Tuskegee airmen during the Second World War. With her dedication and service, Brown trained over 200+ pilots during the war.
