Welcome-fall-while-clinging-to-summer greetings from Shoreline Aviation!

Hi folks, and a happy beginning of fall to you! Hard to imagine summer’s gone by already here on the South Shore of Massachusetts. And that it went so fast, yet again! We hope your summer adventures were fulfilling and fun!

We thought we’d flash back over some summer highlights as we also step our toes into the fall season.

We were especially pleased this summer to see two Shoreline Aviation stories run in South Shore newspapers.

First, our writeup about the South Shore Flying Club ran in several area papers and online. There are many reasons why more than a thousand flying clubs exist around the country – 19 right here in Massachusetts. The economics of club flying make a lot of sense to a lot of pilots who love to fly, but for whom the cost of plane ownership could be prohibitive. So, club members share the expense of plane maintenance, hangar space and such, which makes occasional flying much more affordable. In the South Shore Flying Club’s case, up to 24 active members share the expense of keeping two single-prop planes in shape – using Shoreline Aviation’s Maintenance Department, right here at Marshfield Municipal Airport, where they keep their planes.

The other story area papers ran was about Marshfield resident Timmy Stiles soloing upon just turning 16. Quite an accomplishment! At 14, Tim asked his parents to take him to the airport to see it. It wasn’t long before he started taking flight lessons with certified instructor Roger Means. In fact, his mother told us, Tim got an after-school job to pay for lessons. Tim is so enamored of flying that he said at the time he’d “like to turn flying into a career.” On his first solo day he took off, circled the airport at 1,000 feet and landed three times. According to Roger, Tim’s takeoffs and landings were “perfect.” And, as Roger said to Tim’s parents as we all watched, “He’ll remember this for the rest of his life!”

Another summer highlight here at Shoreline saw retired Delta pilot P.J. Flanagan rejoining Shoreline, after a short break, now as operations director. The husband, father and grandfather flew with Delta Air Lines for 24 years, nearly five of those as chief pilot. He flew Boeing, Airbus and McDonnell Douglas jets of all sizes to destinations across Europe and Asia. He says flying former President Jimmy and First Lady Rosalynn Carter ranks high among his many memorable career moments. Now P.J. is focused on “mentoring younger pilots through their profession.”

P.J. will also lead Shoreline’s certified pilots in flying a Citation XLS+ when it joins Shoreline’s charter fleet this fall. Building on the hugely successful Citation Excel model, Cessna created its XLS model and now the XLS+, offering a roomy, fast and super comfortable flight experience. It can cruise at over 500 MPH and has a range of more than 2,000 miles. Once FAA protocols are in place, this mid-size jet will become available to fly discerning passengers to their destinations, with P.J. and his team in the cockpit.

Halfway through the summer season two local Scout troops got a lesson in pre-flight preparation at Marshfield Municipal Airport, as well as some up-close lessons in aviation physics. They took these and other steps to earn their Aviation Merit Badges.

Marshfield Airport Commissioner and pilot Patrick MacAlister, with his wife, Erin, led the Scouts, including their daughter, Peri, on a tour of a propeller plane in mid-August, with Shoreline Director of Operations Flanagan. Patrick took the Scouts through preflight checklist steps, and P.J. explained how the plane’s mechanical functions work.

The Scouts satisfied the list of requirements to earn their Aviation Merit Badges. Scouts have to complete six action steps in five categories of tasks to earn the badge.

Never let it be said that the Shoreline team won’t take a break on the links for a just cause! In late August, a fearsome foursome featuring Shoreline President Keith Douglass, along with P.J. Flanagan, Steve Nery and Steve Swiech, hit the course for the 11th MBAA Scholarship Golf Tournament, hosted at the scenic Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, MA. It was a huge success!

Each year, the Massachusetts Business Aviation Association’s scholarship committee decides which deserving students will be awarded money for their education.

The money they give out is raised at MBAA’s Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament. The scholarship contributions totaled over $10,000, given to four 2023 scholarship recipients. The MBAA thanks the incredible support of their generous sponsors and attendees helping to raise money for the Aviation Scholarship fund. And the Shoreline team was pleased to join in!

Another summer highlight saw Keith Douglass, Lisa Scharoun, and Erin Mulcahy make an appearance at the second annual BOSS Bash, which was held at the Weathervane Golf Club in Weymouth, MA. The event was put on jointly by South Shore Home, Life & Style magazine and the South Shore Chamber of Commerce. Its purpose was to bring together celebrants to recognize the 220-plus winners of the magazine’s Best of the South Shore 2023 contest. Shoreline/Marshfield Municipal Airport won best airline/airport, up against competition from the Cape to Rhode Island to Boston. Two floors of the golf club were filled of merry makers tasting food and beverage pairings from several of the South Shore’s finest restaurants, bakeries, and distilleries. Members of the popular Hot Mess dance band kept the beat thrumming as the party wended its way into the evening hours.

Those are just some of the highlights from a busy summer season at Shoreline Aviation. Now we all look forward to a fun, festive fall with lots of great flying. Some cool activities line the coming calendar!
